In the tumultuous world of college football, surprises are abound, and the departure of Trevor Etienne from the Florida Gators undoubtedly leaves a significant gap in the team’s running back corps. Etienne’s decision to join Georgia after leading the Gators with eight rushing touchdowns and accumulating an impressive 753 rushing yards came as a blow to many fans. Over two seasons, Etienne had proven himself as a formidable force, amassing 1,472 yards and 14 touchdowns. However, despite the setback, Coach Jabbar Juluke remains steadfast and optimistic about the future of the running back position at Florida.

The Impact of Trevor Etienne’s Departure

Losing a player of Etienne’s caliber undeniably poses challenges for any team. His production on the field was substantial, and his departure undoubtedly leaves a void in the Gators’ offensive lineup. Nonetheless, Coach Juluke maintains a positive outlook, expressing his support for Etienne’s decision while also emphasizing his excitement for the potential of the remaining players.

“I think he’s a phenomenal young man and he did what he thought was best for him and his family. So, I wish him the best. I want him to have success, I love him, right? I don’t just recruit kids for the sake that they’re being recruited, I build relationships and it means something to me,” UF running backs coach Jabbar Juluke said. “So I’m looking forward to whatever his success is, as he goes through college, and I wish him well. But I’m really excited about the young men that are here.”

Montrell Johnson: A Veteran Presence

Amidst the departure of Etienne, the return of Montrell Johnson emerges as a beacon of stability for the Florida Gators’ running back unit. Johnson’s experience and leadership qualities make him a crucial asset to the team. With nearly 2,500 career rushing yards under his belt, Johnson’s role extends beyond his on-field performance; he serves as a mentor and leader for his teammates, providing invaluable guidance both on and off the field.

“He’s experienced and you cannot underestimate experience playing football,” Juluke praises. “You cannot underestimate the knowledge that he has in this offense. You can’t underestimate the value of him being able to catch the ball out of the backfield and play on third down in pass protection or run in between the tackles or outside. He’s just a complete back.”

“He’s the total package and now he’s being a mentor, he’s being a leader,” Juluke added. “He’s sitting next to Jaden Baugh and making sure that they understand what needs to happen. He’s to the left and to the right is Kahnen [Daniels]. They sit right there next to him and when I say write something down, he’s making sure that they’re writing it down the correct way and sharing his notes with them and teaching them how to take notes, how to be prepared, how to be the first one in the training room, how to take care of your body to prevent injuries. He’s the ultimate player, man, and I think he’s going to leave here as one of the best backs to play at the University of Florida when it’s all said and done.”

Emerging Talent: Treyaun Webb

Sophomore Treyaun Webb is poised to step into a more prominent role within the Gators’ running back rotation. Despite limited opportunities in his freshman year, Webb demonstrated his potential and understanding of the game. With Coach Juluke’s guidance, Webb has honed his skills and is prepared to contribute significantly to the team’s success in the upcoming season.

“When I say things are slowing down, I mean that he understands what others are doing now. He’s not just a runner,” Juluke said. “So he has to know exactly what’s taking place and how things are unfolding as they go.”

The Promise of Youth: KD Daniels and Jadan Baugh

The addition of freshmen KD Daniels and Jadan Baugh injects youthful energy and potential into the Gators’ running back stable. While still acclimating to the demands of collegiate football, both Daniels and Baugh showcase promise and talent that bode well for the future of the program. Under Coach Juluke’s tutelage, their growth and development will be closely monitored, with expectations of significant contributions in the seasons to come.

“I can see the growth,” Juluke said. “I see it developing right in front of our eyes so I’m excited about what they’re going to do. They’re going to have a bright future for the Gators.”

Cam Carroll’s Road to Recovery

Redshirt senior Cam Carroll’s journey back from injury represents a testament to resilience and perseverance. Despite facing setbacks due to a knee injury sustained during fall camp in 2023, Carroll remains determined to return to peak performance. Coach Juluke acknowledges Carroll’s leadership and positive influence on the younger players, highlighting his invaluable role within the team dynamic.

“He’s doing really well, you know, he’s progressing. He might be a little ahead, but I’m not 100% on that, but he has a long road to go. But he’s doing well. He’s got good spirits,” Juluke said. “He’s been a leader, also, with those young guys, helping them out as best as he can right now. He can get a little frustrated, so I’m trying to be as positive with him as I possibly can and make sure that his mental capacity is still there, his psychic, once he does have the opportunity to get back out there and be able to perform at a high level.”

While the departure of Trevor Etienne undoubtedly leaves a void within the Florida Gators’ running back corps, the room remains resilient and optimistic about the future. Led by the experienced Montrell Johnson and bolstered by emerging talents such as Treyaun Webb, KD Daniels, and Jadan Baugh, the Gators are poised to continue a strong running game.
