The Florida Gators’ defense received exciting news as standout EDGE rusher Tyreak Sapp is set to return for the 2025 season. Sapp’s decision, along with defensive lineman Caleb Banks’ commitment to return, significantly strengthens Florida’s defensive lineup as they set their sights on a College Football Playoff run.
Dominant 2024 Performance
Sapp emerged as Florida’s defensive cornerstone in 2024, earning the team’s highest defensive grade at 90.0 overall (PFF). His exceptional performance ranked third among SEC edge defenders and ninth in the FBS. With impressive grades of 87.1 in run defense and 81.5 in pass rush, Sapp led the Gators with seven sacks and 13 tackles-for-loss, totaling 48 yards. His two forced fumbles tied for the team lead, while his sack and TFL numbers placed him among the SEC’s top ten.
Spectacular Season Finish
Sapp’s impact was particularly evident during Florida’s four-game winning streak to close the 2024 season. His performances in three crucial matchups showcased his game-changing abilities:
- vs. No. 21 LSU: Posted a team-high 86.9 PFF grade while setting career highs in total tackles (8), solo tackles (4), and TFL (4), including a crucial third-down sack in the final drive
- vs. No. 9 Ole Miss: Delivered 1.5 sacks in the fourth quarter alone, forcing a punt and securing the game on the Rebels’ final drive
- at Florida State: Led with an 85 PFF grade, recording five tackles (three solo), two TFL, one sack, and a forced fumble, while achieving a career-best 88.7 PFF run defense grade
With Sapp and Banks returning, the Gators are positioning themselves as serious contenders for the 2025 season, building on their strong defensive foundation.
