Bad news on the injury front starts early for the Florida Gators in fall camp as running back Montrell Johnson has suffered a minor knee injury. Johnson had a scope performed and is his status week-to-week, sources have confirmed to Gators Breakdown. The injury occurred in Friday evening’s practice.
Johnson decided to return for his senior season to boost his NFL Draft stock and was expected to have an increased workload after Trevor Etienne transferred to rival Georgia. Johnson led the team in rushing yards (817) for the second straight season in 2023, averaging 5.4 yards per carry and 68.0 yards per game, scoring six touchdowns (five rushing and one receiving). He also caught a career-high 30 passes for 236 yards.
With no definitive timeline for Johnson’s return, the running back room will rely on sophomore Treyaun Webb, freshmen Jadan Baugh and KD Daniels, and RS junior Ja’Kobi Jackson for a crucial early season stretch that includes games against Miami and Texas A&M. Webb is the only back in the group with experience from last season, playing in 11 games as a reserve running back and on special teams. He totaled 163 rushing yards on 26 attempts with two rushing touchdowns and had four catches for 18 yards.
