The Florida Gators are navigating roster changes as they prepare for their upcoming game against Samford. True freshman quarterback D.J. Lagway is set to make his first career start, following an injury to senior QB Graham Mertz during last week’s game against Miami.
Head coach Billy Napier commented on Lagway’s readiness: “D.J.’s got a great attitude. He’s excited for this opportunity and eager to apply what he learned from his brief appearance last week.” In that game, Lagway completed 3 of 6 passes for 31 yards and rushed for an additional 20 yards after Mertz left with a concussion.
The quarterback change isn’t the only hurdle the Gators are facing. Napier revealed that approximately one-third of the starting lineup will be sidelined for Saturday’s game, with the secondary particularly affected. Key players out of action include:
-
- Graham Mertz (QB) – Concussion protocol
- Asa Turner (Strong Safety) – Lower body injury
- Devin Moore (Cornerback) – Upper body injury
- Sharif Denson (STAR) – Unspecified injury
- Joey Slackman (Defensive Line) – Unspecified injury
To fill these gaps, the Gators will rely on several backups, including redshirt junior Caleb Banks on the defensive line, sophomore Ja’Keem Jackson at cornerback, senior DJ Douglas at safety, and redshirt freshman Aaron Gates at the STAR position.
Despite these setbacks, Napier remains optimistic, stating, “We’re hopeful to get some of these players back soon. In the meantime, this presents an opportunity for our depth players to step up and showcase their abilities.”
As the Gators prepare to face Samford, all eyes will be on Lagway and how the reshuffled lineup performs. This game could be a test of the team’s depth and adaptability early in the 2024 season.
