ESPN names Florida’s ‘season-defining game’ for 2025

Florida Gators running out of tunnel

After a four-game winning streak to end the 2024 season—including victories over LSU and Ole Miss—Florida enters 2025 and Billy Napier’s fourth season as head coach with praise and momentum. While the 2025 conference schedule mirrors last season’s and will undoubtedly be another tough run for Florida, one question remains: which game is the most pivotal for the Gators?

The concept of pivotal games has evolved in college football. Under the new format, teams can sustain multiple losses and still qualify for the College Football Playoff. Ohio State demonstrated this in 2024 when they lost their crucial matchup against rival Michigan in the final week, only to go on and win the National Championship. While rivalries remain important, their losses may not carry the same weight they once did—especially when teams still have more to play for.

ESPN has identified a “season-defining game” for their “Way-Too-Early Top 25” teams, and for the Gators, it’s an early-season matchup.

18. Florida Gators

2024 record: 8-5, 4-4 SEC

Season-defining game: Sept. 13 at LSU

Prior to last season’s victory, Florida had lost five consecutive games against LSU. Florida finished the 2024 season strong, in part because of momentum gained after its win over then-No. 22 LSU in mid-November. The Gators went on to post four consecutive wins, showing a great measure of improvement from the team they were earlier in the season. In 2025, the Gators open their SEC slate on the road in Baton Rouge, and a win in that game against what will be one of the better quarterbacks they see all season in Garrett Nussmeier would go a long way in setting the table for the rest of their season. A loss in this game wouldn’t ruin their season by any stretch with the 12-team playoff format, but there could be tons to gain with a solid victory in one of the toughest places to play in college football with quarterback DJ Lagway in his first full season as the starter. — Harry Lyles Jr.

Harry Lyles’ ESPN analysis makes sense, particularly given Florida’s rocky start in 2024. With LSU as the third game and SEC opener of the season, a strong performance could set the tone for a potential College Football Playoff run—especially if the Gators can maintain their late-season momentum from last year. A victory there would mark Napier’s most significant road win as Florida’s head coach.

Beyond LSU, two other crucial matchups stand out: the week four contest against Miami in South Florida and the traditional rivalry game against Georgia in Jacksonville.

The Miami game offers Florida a chance to avenge their crushing 41-17 season-opening loss from 2024. Coming right after LSU, this matchup could either build on the momentum of two major early-season wins or serve as a critical bounce-back opportunity. Either way, defeating their in-state rival would boost confidence in Billy Napier’s program as he enters his fourth year.

The Georgia game represents another key hurdle. Napier is still seeking his first win against Bulldogs’ head coach Kirby Smart after three losses, with Florida’s last victory in the series dating back to 2020. Last year’s matchup slipped away after QB DJ Lagway’s injury when Florida led 10-3, ultimately falling 34-20. While no single game determines playoff chances anymore, breaking through against their biggest conference rival feels overdue.

Among Florida’s seven 2025 opponents ranked in ESPN’s “Way-Too-Early Top 25,” only Ole Miss had the Gators listed as their most pivotal game.

25. Ole Miss Rebels

2024 record: 10-3, 5-3 SEC

Season-defining game: Nov. 15 vs. Florida

Once again, Ole Miss has what appears to be a manageable schedule, as it plays the same conference opponents it did in 2024 only in reverse — home games last season are road games this year. The easy one to choose here is the game at Georgia on Oct. 18. But remember, the Rebels easily beat the Bulldogs 28-10 last season. Where they tripped up was against teams they should have beaten, and that ultimately cost them a spot in the CFP. That is why I am going with a bit of a wild card — vs. Florida on Nov. 15. That third loss in 2024 to the Gators is what did in the Rebels. Based on the way the 12-team playoff went in Year 1, it stands to reason that getting at least 10 wins will either lead to an SEC championship game appearance or possible at-large playoff spot. Ole Miss does get LSU and South Carolina at home this year. So I am going to project that Ole Miss will be in position for another playoff run by the time it plays the Gators. — Adelson

The Gators face several pivotal matchups that could shape their playoff aspirations in 2025. While the September 13 LSU game and the Miami clash present early tests, and the Georgia rivalry remains a significant hurdle, the new 12-team playoff format offers multiple paths to success. With DJ Lagway leading the offense and momentum from their strong 2024 finish, Florida has positioned themselves to potentially make waves in what promises to be another competitive season.
