In an unexpected turn of events, true freshman DJ Lagway has been thrust into the Florida Gators’ starting quarterback role for the remainder of the 2024 season. With incumbent starter Graham Mertz sidelined due to a season-ending ACL injury, Lagway’s role has suddenly expanded from a rotating player to the team’s primary signal-caller.

Despite the challenges that typically face first-year college players, Lagway has shown remarkable poise and potential. Florida’s head coach Billy Napier praised Lagway’s preparation, stating, “I would like to think that he has been preparing as if he’s one play away from being in the game at any point in time. And I think his work habits have been established”.
Lagway’s dual-threat capabilities have already been on display this season. In the first half, he’s carried the ball 20 times for 90 rushing yards, averaging 4.5 yards per carry. However, with his elevated role comes new concerns about protecting the young quarterback from injury, especially given the team’s lack of experienced depth at the position.
Coach Napier acknowledges the delicate balance required in utilizing Lagway’s running abilities while ensuring his safety. “It’s part of playing that position these days. In our league, heck, it might as well be the NFL,” Napier said, emphasizing the importance of smart decision-making when the quarterback is involved in the run game.
As Lagway prepares for his first SEC start against the Kentucky Wildcats, the Gators are optimistic about his potential impact. Napier believes that Lagway’s previous game experience and full-time practice with the first team will benefit both the player and the team.
With Lagway at the helm, the Gators are entering a new chapter in their season. While challenges lie ahead, the young quarterback’s confidence and skill set have the team looking forward to what he can achieve as he continues to develop in his new role.
