Florida Gators redshirt sophomore defensive lineman Jamari Lyons suffered a season-ending ankle injury during Florida’s first fall camp scrimmage, head coach Billy Napier confirmed Monday.
“Jamari Lyons broke his ankle, and he’ll be out for the season,” Napier said. “Obviously our thoughts and prayers are with him.”
Reports surfaced Saturday that Lyons was injured early in Florida’s scrimmage, placed in an air cast, and underwent surgery on Saturday. The entire team gathered around Lyons as he was carted off, according to Napier.
Lyons was expected to play a major role for the Gators, backing up senior nose tackle Cam Jackson. Without Lyons, the Gators will turn to senior Desmond Watson to back up Jackson. Florida can also use players at defensive end like Penn transfer Joey Slackman or Caleb Banks in certain situations. The Gators also have sophomore Kelby Collins and freshmen D’Antre Robinson and Michai Boireau up front to shuffle roles in Lyons’ absence.
