The Gators had an easy time defeating McNeese on Saturday night, winning 49-7. Here are some key takeaways from the game:
Run game rebounds
After struggling against Utah with a total of 31 yards, Trevor Etienne and Montrell Johnson had a strong showing against McNeese, combining for 203 yards and three touchdowns. Freshman Treyaun Webb added another 71 yards, adding to a total of 327 rushing yards on 51 carries on the night for the offense. This is a positive sign for Florida’s offense, especially considering center Kingsley Eguakun was out for the game and there was a healthy rotation along the offensive line.
Mertz performs well
Quarterback Graham Mertz played a solid game, completing 14 of 17 passes for 193 yards and one touchdown. He also took care of the ball and was not sacked by McNeese. Mertz’s highlight came on his last play of of the night with a 50-yard touchdown pass down field to Ricky Pearsall.
Defense dominates
Florida’s defense looked strong for the second game in a row. The defense played with discipline and fundamentals that had been lacking in recent years, and even with several true freshmen in the lineup. Linebackers Shemar James and Scooby Williams set the tone early, and Williams had a key sack on 3rd down to prevent a McNeese field goal attempt. McNeese struggled to convert on 3rd downs, going 2-10 for the game. The Gators’ shutout was broken only by a fumble deep in their own territory, which McNeese immediately turned into their only score.
