Florida Gators head coach Billy Napier reaffirmed his confidence in quarterback DJ Lagway’s recovery timeline during an appearance on SEC This Morning with Peter Burns and Chris Doering on Friday. This latest update follows his initial comments after Florida’s Orange and Blue Spring Game.
Lagway, who has been limited this spring due to shoulder and lower body injuries, was notably absent from active participation in Florida’s spring game on April 12, only appearing to hand off the ball. While the team has been deliberately reserved with information about Lagway’s condition out of respect for the family’s wishes, Napier provided a clear picture of the quarterback’s progress during his SEC Network appearance.
“We have no concern. We’ve dotted all the I’s and crossed all the T’s. We’ve been a little bit tight-lipped about it just in respect to the family and the way they want to handle it,” Napier explained. “But in general, we have a really good plan, we’re working with exceptional people, and he’ll begin throwing here in a couple of weeks.”
“Everything is on schedule. He’s in a great place,” Napier continued. “He’s been able to practice, he’s been able to stay connected with the team, and obviously the return to play and the rehab part is going really well. We start OTAs the first week in June and he’ll be 100-percent by that point.”
The update comes as welcome news for the Gators, as Lagway showed considerable promise in his rookie season. In 2024, he posted impressive numbers with 1,915 passing yards, 12 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions, leading Florida to a 6-1 record in his starts after taking over for an injured Graham Mertz.
Looking ahead, the Gators face one of the nation’s most challenging schedules in 2025, with BetMGM setting their projected win total at 6.5 wins.
With Lagway set to return to full strength by June and face a challenging 2025 schedule, the Gators’ success will heavily depend on their young quarterback’s development. After an impressive rookie season that showcased his potential and winning record as a starter, Lagway now carries the team’s hopes as he aims to build on his early success and guide Florida through this pivotal season.
