Tramell Jones vs LIU

In a surprising turn of events during Florida’s dominant 55-0 victory over Long Island, true freshman Tramell Jones Jr. emerged as the Gators’ backup quarterback, leapfrogging both Aidan Warner and Harrison Bailey on the depth chart.

Jones didn’t just stand on the sidelines – he commanded the entire second half under center, becoming the next Florida true freshman quarterback to see action since Lagway in Week 1 of last season. His debut was nothing short of impressive, as he completed 12 of 18 passes for 131 yards and two touchdowns, earning a stellar 164.5 passer rating.

A Pure Passer with Undeniable Talent

Head coach Billy Napier was effusive in his praise for the young signal-caller: “Tramell has earned the job. He’s really had a strong surge the last few weeks.”

What makes Jones special? According to Napier, “He’s a pure passer, man. He can really throw it. He’s got velocity on the ball. The spin rate is impressive and then he’s a very accurate quarterback.”

Those watching from the sidelines couldn’t help but notice Jones’ composure. He “looked ready for the moment. Showed confidence, poise. Throwing tight spirals with good velocity on the ball”.

Overcoming Adversity

Starting quarterback DJ Lagway revealed that Jones’ journey hasn’t been without challenges: “The things he’s dealt with the last year or so with his injury in high school. Man, I’m so proud of him. I’m so excited for his journey. He’s going to be a heck of a player.”

A Bright Future Ahead

Linebacker Myles Graham, who faces Jones regularly in practice, sees unlimited potential: “He’s electrifying. You can see it with his legs. He can do it with his arm. He’s got a great deep ball. He’s accurate.”

Graham even offered a glimpse into what Gators fans might expect in coming seasons: “He’ll be a great player for us one day. Him learning from DJ, that’s a deadly combo right there and I think after DJ’s gone, he’ll be a great player for us.”

With a strong debut now behind him, Jones appears positioned to continue his development. As Coach Napier noted, “There’s no substitute for playing in a game. I think that was Tramell’s first opportunity. I think he’ll be better next time.”

For Florida fans, the future at quarterback looks promising indeed.
