In the heart of Gainesville, a new chapter is unfolding for J. Michael Sturdivant, a wide receiver whose career trajectory reads like a rollercoaster of college football fortune. After earning First Team All-American honors with California in 2022 with an impressive 65 catches for 755 yards and seven touchdowns as a redshirt freshman, Sturdivant experienced a statistical decline during his UCLA tenure.
Now, as the highest-ranked transfer in Florida’s 2025 class at No. 117 nationally in the On3 Industry rankings, Sturdivant brings a unique combination of experience and untapped potential to a Gators program known for revitalizing transfer receivers.

A Match Made in Heaven: Sturdivant and Lagway
At the core of Sturdivant’s excitement about joining Florida is the opportunity to catch passes from sophomore quarterback DJ Lagway, whose deep-ball prowess perfectly complements Sturdivant’s field-stretching abilities.
“Lagway, he’s got a great deep ball, and I got a lot of speed and I love to make the big plays,” said Sturdivant. “So I feel like that’s like a match made in heaven. I’m very excited to be able to go out and help DJ elevate, help this team make a lot of explosive plays.”
The connection is already showing promise in practice, with Lagway recently uncorking a 50-yard deep ball to Sturdivant during recent 7-on-7 drills.
From Kansas Neighborhood to The Swamp
Sturdivant’s journey to Florida features an interesting connection to his past. Growing up in Overland Park, Kansas, he played neighborhood football with Graham Mertz, who would later become Florida’s quarterback before Lagway.
“We would just kick it, play with airsoft guns and all type of stuff. It was a good time,” Sturdivant recalled about growing up with Mertz. “We would play (football) in the street, when all the kids get together. You play, throw the ball around with each other.”
When considering his transfer options, Sturdivant reached out to his childhood neighbor for insights about Florida.
“I saw he was here for two years, had a good time while he was here,” Sturdivant said. “I saw the success that he had here, and the success with the people that they brought here to play receiver. He just had nothing but great things to say about the school.”
Physical Transformation and Potential
Since arriving at Florida, Sturdivant has undergone a remarkable physical transformation while maintaining his elite speed. He revealed that he has added approximately 15 pounds through the Gators’ strength and conditioning program, going from 200 to 215 pounds.
“I’m just trying to build myself, fill my frame out and still maintain my speed and my strength,” he explained. “I hit all PRs in the weight room, lifetime PRs in the weight room, when we maxed out before fall camp started.”
Most impressively, despite the added muscle, Sturdivant claims to have reached a top speed of roughly 23 miles per hour.
“If not, it was right under,” he said. “But I feel very great right now. I feel very fast and very strong. And I feel ready to go.”
His new teammates have certainly taken notice of his athletic gifts. Cornerback Devin Moore remarked, “J-Mike is another unique receiver, one of those bigger builds. I don’t know if you guys know in high school he also ran a 10.3 [second 100-meter dash] in track. So he’s got a lot of speed, too. Don’t let the size fool you.”
Following a Proven Path
Florida’s track record with transfer receivers was a major factor in Sturdivant’s decision to join the Gators. Under head coach Billy Napier and wide receivers coach Billy Gonzales, previous transfers Ricky Pearsall, Chimere Dike, and Elijhah Badger all achieved career highs in various receiving categories, with each eventually making it to the NFL.
“I just knew the program, I knew the direction that the program was heading, the skill set that was here and their recent history with transfer portal receivers,” Sturdivant explained. “So it was just a whole bunch of good things that were all trending upwards that I wanted to come and be a part of, and help this program win.”
With Dike and Badger now in the NFL after successful 2024 seasons with Florida, Sturdivant’s experience and potential will be crucial for the Gators’ passing attack this season. The 6-foot-2.5, 213-pound receiver brings valuable experience with 40 appearances and 30 starts at the college level.
For Sturdivant, Florida represents not just a new team, but an opportunity to recapture the form that once made him one of college football’s most promising receivers. With his combination of size, speed, experience, and a quarterback who can unleash his deep-threat potential, the stage is set for what could be a spectacular final collegiate season.
