Florida Gators Dominate Mississippi State, Claim Sole SEC Championship in Emotional Senior Night Victory

by | Mar 4, 2026

In a performance that will be remembered for years to come, the #5 Florida Gators demolished Mississippi State 108-74 at the Exactech Arena, securing sole possession of the SEC regular season championship while honoring their seniors in spectacular fashion.

Golden Milestone Amid Championship Glory

The victory held special significance beyond the conference title. Head coach Todd Golden became the sixth coach in Florida history to reach 100 wins—and did so faster than anyone before him, achieving the milestone in just 139 games to surpass Billy Donovan’s previous record of 154. Golden also joined elite company as just the third coach ever to win 100 games within his first four seasons at an SEC school, alongside Kentucky legends John Calipari and Tubby Smith.

“I think it’s more of a reflection of the guys that we have in our program and the job they’ve done,” Golden said humbly when asked about the achievement.

Seniors Shine on Their Special Night

Senior Night can be an emotional minefield for athletes, but Florida’s departing stars rose to the occasion. Xaivian Lee delivered a phenomenal performance with 19 points, six assists, five rebounds, and four steals. His +42 plus-minus rating was extraordinary, marking the first time this season the Gators had multiple players with a +40 or better.

“It meant a lot just to hear the crowd roar when me and X walked out,” said senior center Micah Handlogten, who contributed 10 points and nine rebounds in his second start of the season. “Just to have so many people here that have witnessed my story and seeing how I handled my lows, but also how I handled my highs…it meant a lot and something I won’t forget.”

Condon’s Career Night Leads Offensive Explosion

While the seniors grabbed headlines, it was Alex Condon who truly stole the show with a season-high 26 points. Coach Golden couldn’t contain his praise: “The tenacity and toughness that he played with in the paint and at the rim was just special”.

The Gators’ offensive firepower was spread across the roster. Six players reached double figures, including Rueben Chinyelu with 11 points and 16 rebounds for his 18th double-double—tying Florida’s 50-year-old program record set by Bob Smyth in 1975-76.

Historic Comeback and Dominant Stretch

The game didn’t start smoothly for Florida. Mississippi State jumped out to a 24-14 lead, but the Gators responded with an emphatic 18-0 run—their second-longest of the season. It marked the program’s first double-digit comeback win since the national championship victory over Houston.

The 34-point margin of victory was no fluke. Coupled with Saturday’s 34-point win over Arkansas, Florida became the first team to score 105+ points and win by 30+ in back-to-back SEC games since Kentucky in 1971.

Freshman Steps Up in Crucial Moment

With starter Thomas Haugh unable to play, freshman CJ Ingram seized his opportunity. The young guard hit a pair of first-half 3-pointers and posted career highs with eight points and three assists. Coach Golden noted that Ingram was a plus-21 in the first half alone.

“Every day before and after practice, including days off, I’m in the gym,” Ingram explained about his preparation. “Just watching guys like Tommy, X and Boogie workout, how hard they go, they’re like role models to me”.

Championship Pedigree and Home Dominance

By clinching the outright SEC championship, Florida captured its sixth outright conference title in program history. The victory also extended the Gators’ remarkable home dominance to 43-3 over the last three seasons, with just one loss per season—the third time in program history they’ve achieved this feat.

The win extended Florida’s winning streak to 10 games, the fifth-longest SEC winning streak in program history and the 13th double-digit win streak overall.

Looking Ahead

As the regular season concludes, Florida has established itself as a legitimate championship contender. Senior Xaivian Lee, who reached the 1,500-point scoring milestone for his career during the game, reflected on closing out his home career: “From the entire game to the last shot, all of it felt like a nice close to our playing in the O’Dome”.

With momentum building, record-breaking performances, and a championship mindset firmly in place, the Gators are positioned to make serious noise in the postseason. As Coach Golden noted, despite being upset about one loss to Auburn, “we had a great run in here and just really proud of the way our guys have continued to play at that level”.
