Wilson, who had been sidelined due to a season-ending hip surgery in 2024, couldn’t contain his excitement as the team entered the stadium. In a memorable entrance that caught even his coach by surprise, Wilson bolted ahead of the team formation.
“I didn’t even realize I ran past Coach Napier,” Wilson said. “Something just told me to get out in front right away, and I just haven’t been able to run out the tunnel like that in a minute. Most definitely missed it.”
That burst of enthusiasm wasn’t just about the game day atmosphere. For Wilson, it represented the culmination of months of rehabilitation and anticipation.
“I feel like that just kind of came from it being built up on from all last season being missed out on,” he said. “Just being excited for the moment coming up throughout the whole offseason, especially coming out that tunnel.”
The Freshman All-American missed the final seven games of last season due to a congenital hip condition that required surgical intervention. What Wilson initially dismissed as normal athletic discomfort turned out to be more serious.
“I just thought that just came with the game,” Wilson said of the discomfort he felt. “Just a little break down, but it’s a lot that we found out.”
The medical team was thorough in their approach, ensuring Wilson fully understood the situation and treatment plan.
“They told me everything. I feel like we had a good understanding of what was needed to be done. I trusted them, and I feel like God had me.”
Wilson’s recovery journey began with gradual progress in the spring, when he started running at full speed again. But perhaps more significantly, the rehabilitation process transformed his approach to athletic preparation.
“Throughout the whole process, it kind of allowed me to learn things about my body. Just find out things,” he said. “It kind of forced me to dive deeper into nutrition and finding new ways to take care of my body. Just become more of a pro off the field.”
The crowd erupted when Wilson capped his comeback story by catching the first touchdown pass of the 2025 season from quarterback DJ Lagway during the Gators’ dominant 55-0 victory over Long Island University. The moment perfectly bookended his journey from the energetic tunnel entrance to scoring success.
“It felt good,” Wilson said Monday. “Just got up, excited, ready to get back on the sideline with my teammates.”
