The Florida Gators’ 2025 season has gotten off to a rocky start with a 1-3 record, with the offense struggling to find its rhythm. However, the defense has been a bright spot, continuing its strong performance from last season. One player making a significant impact is cornerback Cormani McClain, who has to step up even more as fellow cornerback Dijon Johnson’s season-ending injury has created more opportunities.

McClain’s path to becoming a key contributor for the Gators has been anything but straightforward. As the top-ranked cornerback in the 2023 recruiting class, his commitment process was filled with surprises. Initially expected to choose Florida, McClain shocked observers by committing to Miami in October 2022, only to later flip to Colorado after not signing during the early period.
His freshman season at Colorado was challenging both on and off the field. The Lakeland, Florida native struggled to get playing time and had difficulties in his relationship with Head Coach Deion Sanders and teammates. Issues with punctuality and attendance at team meetings further complicated his situation. Following this disappointing debut season, McClain entered the transfer portal and ultimately chose to walk on at Florida despite the questions surrounding his commitment.
“The process was slow,” McClain explained about his recruitment to Florida. “Coach Nape was like the first person to call me during my recruitment. He told me that you are going to have to actually work for something right here. And I was like, ‘I’m down for it.’ I told him I’m ready to work, Coach. Let’s do it.”
Even after joining the Gators, McClain initially struggled with some of the same issues he experienced at Colorado. He redshirted during the 2024 season, which wasn’t unexpected considering his walk-on status.
A turning point came during the last offseason when teammate Tyreak Sapp mentored McClain on his approach to the game and professional development. The guidance appears to have made a significant difference in McClain’s attitude and performance.
“Since we came back in January, I don’t know what it was, but it was a switch. He’s like, a totally different guy,” teammate George Gumbs Jr. observed. “So he’s been working harder, you know, just working on this craft, working on his body. He looked great, great character, so I just love to have him around now.”
The 2025 season has showcased McClain’s growth and development. He has already played 136 snaps through the first four games and earned his second start with the Gators in week three against LSU. Despite Florida’s loss in that contest, McClain displayed remarkable effort and determination. With the game effectively decided late in the fourth quarter, he chased down LSU running back Caden Durham, preventing a touchdown in a play that exemplified his improved work ethic and commitment.
McClain’s performance against Miami – ironically, the team he had once committed to – was perhaps his most impressive yet. He recorded the highest Pro Football Focus grade (84.9) among Florida defenders and intercepted the only pass thrown in his direction during the game.
Florida head coach Billy Napier has taken notice of McClain’s transformation, stating, “His attitude is where it needs to be. He’s got the right mindset. I’m proud of him.”
As the Gators look to turn their season around, McClain’s continued development could be a key factor in strengthening the defense and potentially changing the team’s fortunes in the remaining games.
