“Once COVID struck, it went dark for a while,” Gumbs recalled. “Once the recruitment started back up, I fell all the way down to like D2 and FCS. It was terrible. I feel like at that young age it was so hard for me.”
Despite the setback, Gumbs refused to give up on his dream. He walked on at Northern Illinois University as a wide receiver, later transitioning to tight end. His breakthrough came in 2023 when he switched to defense, playing as an edge rusher.
“Once I got transitioned to D-end I was like, ok, just buy in to this and see what I can get out of it,” Gumbs said. His bet on himself paid off, as he finished the 2023 season with impressive stats: 32 total tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, three quarterback hurries, and two forced fumbles across seven starts.
Gumbs’ performance caught the attention of several Power Five programs, including Florida. After initially committing to Cincinnati, a call from Florida’s recruiting department changed his trajectory. He visited Gainesville and fell in love with the program, ultimately flipping his commitment to the Gators.
At Florida, Gumbs has continued to impress. Head coach Billy Napier praised his work ethic and resilience: “I just think the guy’s resilient. He’s tough and his work habits are second to none. Since he’s gotten here, I think maybe he’s gained 18 pounds. He’s physically a different guy. He’s taken full advantage of the resources.”
Gumbs’ impact was immediately felt in the 2024 season. In Florida’s 45-7 victory over Samford, he recorded three tackles for loss, one sack, and one QB hurry. His performance has earned him significant playing time, logging the 7th most snaps on the Gators’ defense (71) and the most amongst Florida’s edge rushers through two games.
Despite his success, Gumbs remains grounded, drawing from his experience as a walk-on. “I know how it feels to tread on thin ice,” he said. “You can’t make a mistake (as a walk-on). It’s hard. Being a walk-on is hard. You don’t get the same leeway as other athletes, highly recruited athletes. You don’t get treated the same.”
As Gumbs continues to develop on the defensive side of the ball, his journey serves as an inspiration and a reminder of the power of perseverance in the face of adversity.
